Brief

The Bupa Great Manchester Run is regarded as Britain’s premier 10km run attracting world class athletes and thousands of fundraisers.

Millions are raised for good causes and the event is broadcast live by the BBC to a global television audience.

Running legend Haile Gebrselassie, 38, secured his fourth Great Manchester Run title ahead of European Championship 1,000m silver medalist Chris Thompson while Helen Clitheroe, 37, led from start-to-finish in the women’s event.

The Bupa Great Manchester Run was first of three events for the 2011 event, branded a Great Day of Sport.

The event, named Best Sports Participation Event of the Year, featured three incredible events; the Bupa Great Manchester Run, followed by the British Gas Great Manchester Swim, culminating with the Powerade ION4 Great City Games.

More than 40,000 participants took part with a further 75,000 people given the chance to watch world class athletes such as Haile Gebrselassie, Jess Ennis, Tyson Gay, Christine Ohuruogu and Chris Thompson close up during the day.

Olympian Keri-Anne Payne clinched the 1-mile open water Great Swim title followed home by Cassie Patten while Germany’s Thomas Lurz secured the men’s title.

Tactics

Onside joined Tangerine PR, a Manchester based PR agency, to provide support to event organisers Nova International.
We worked to promote the weekend securing coverage in national newspapers, magazines, managed pre-and post-event press conferences, managed celebrity runners and high profile athletes during the event.
Onside were able to create photo opportunities that included a trip to the set of Coronation Street, television interviews with Philip and Julie Neville and a host of media opportunities.
We also managed media attendees at the event, managing press conferences and athlete appearances.
