Nekoda Davis is a British judo star with a big future and a genuine medal hope for Team GB at Rio 2016.
The Commonwealth Games Champion is way ahead of her own schedule and is now fully focused on adding an Olympic Gold medal to her growing list of titles later this summer.
Yet it could have been so different for the young Nekoda who admits she only fell into Judo because her Mum couldn’t afford to send her to dancing or music lessons.
The talented athlete opened her heart to Onside PR with an exclusive interview for PharmaNutricals, official nutrition partners to British Judo.
She explained: “I started Judo at school, just as an after school club. I was quite a small girl, a bit shy, not very tough and I think Mum thought if anyone picked on you at school it would be good to learn some self-defence and fight off all the boys! That’s how I got into it.
“Mum has always been a single mum looking after me and my brother. It has always been tough, we only actually did Judo growing up because my Mum couldn’t actually afford to take us to any other activities.
“I think for her she always gets quite emotional talking about the fact that I have actually made it in Judo. She didn’t really expect it. She just thought I want them to do something and although I can’t afford to do the things they probably want, maybe go to dance classes or learn and instrument, Judo was the cheaper way for us to do something after school.
“To be honest I hated it, I hated it all through school. I didn’t like fighting that much but I stuck at it, I had a really nice coach and she looked after me and I think because there was quite a good bond there I just continued it, then moved to a bigger club and that was really competitive and then I got really into it.”
