JEMMA SIMPSON has been selected for the British team at the European Championships in Helsinki.
The 28-year-old has been picked to represent Team GB in both the 800m and 1500m – though it is unlikely she will run.
Team GB selectors have announced their squad early but will then deselect athletes that qualify for the Olympics at this week’s trials in Birmingham.
It is the first time ever the European Championships have been held in the same year as the Olympics following the move to a two-year cycle instead of four years.
Athletes at the trials who gains guaranteed Olympic team selection will be deselected from the team for Helsinki – apart from the 5000m and 10,000m events, which are due to be straight finals at the European Championships.
Athletes in field events, however, will have the option of keeping or declining their place on the team for Helsinki.
